About the IAOBP

The IAOBP (International Association of Buteyko Practitioners) was founded in London in 1996, under the auspices of Professor K.P Buteyko by Alexander Stalmatski, Vladimir Sukhonosov, Christopher Drake, and Jac Vidgen.

In accordance with Professor Buteyko’s approach to the training of facilitators and practitioners, we are very pleased to invite applications from our patients, health professionals and others who have an interest in providing the classical Buteyko’s Method.

Our approach is quite different to any other kind of Buteyko professional training on the market as it follows Professor Buteyko’s system for the training of practitioners. For example, we do not simply offer a practitioner course over two weeks, two months or six months as such.

Instead, we invite aspiring Buteyko facilitators and practitioners to learn and work with us on an ongoing basis, so they may authentically develop their skills and experience. This was the system that Professor Buteyko developed for his own team of practitioners.

What is the Buteyko Method?

The Buteyko Method was discovered in the 1950’s by a Russian medical scientist named Professor K.P. Buteyko. Professor Buteyko’s exhaustive research led him to the conclusion that several hundred chronic diseases could be scientifically explained as a consequence of habitually breathing above the physiologically recommended norm (over-ventalation).

It occurred to Professor Buteyko that if he could retrain the breathing pattern so that it reverted toward the norm he could reverse these diseases. After years of experimentation Professor Buteyko managed to develop a process to normalize the breathing pattern, which over the last 50+ years has allowed tens of thousands of people to reverse their chronic diseases. This system or approach has become known as The Buteyko Method.

The tendency to involuntarily and habitually over breathe is known as chronic hyperventilation syndrome (CHVS) and is extremely common and is estimated to afflict (to various degrees) over 80% of all people.

Exhaustive research showed that all sufferers of asthma, allergies, diabetes and some two hundred separately named diseases share one thing in common – all of them ventilate or breathe significantly above the physiologically recommended norm. And people who breathe within the physiologically recommended norm do not suffer with any of these diseases.

It occurred to Professor Buteyko that if he could retrain the breathing pattern so that it reverted toward the norm of 3 – 4 liters per minute – he could reverse these diseases.
